Reisen und Abenteuer im Nordwesten Australiens

Der Nordwesten Australiens ist eine der letzten großen
Wildnisse der Erde. Die Kimberley und die Pilbara Region
vereinend, ist der Norden des Staates Western Australia
Heimat für einzigartig schroffe und doch wunderschöne, fast
unberührte Landschaften.

Den Sonnenuntergang am Cable Beach erleben, wilden
Kreaturen in die Augen schauen, Bushwalking, 4-wheel-drive
Touren auf der Gibb River Road oder in Broome einfach
entspannt in den Tag hinein leben - der Nordwesten
Australiens bietet für jeden Besucher das richtige
Programm.

Die Region beeindruckt durch ihre landschaftliche
Vielfältigkeit und kulturelle Diversität. Scheinbar
endloses Outback in Kombination mit malerischen Flüssen,
die sich durch die Landschaften schlängeln - tobende
Wasserfälle des Buccaneer Archipels und imposante
Schluchten im Karijini National Park -einheimische Kunst
und Kultur verbunden mit Weltoffenheit und Lebensart.

Zu den spannendsten Reisezielen down under gehören die
Kimberleys mit ihren rauen Landschaften und ursprünglichen
Kostbarkeiten. Broome gilt als Tor in dieses grenzenlos
anmutende Gebiet. Im 19. Jahrhundert als Zentrum für den
Perlenhandel mit Asien gegründet, ist Broome heute eine
populäre Destination für Reisende aus dem In- und Ausland.
Broome - das bedeutet Abenteuer, Exotik, tropische Strände.
Chinatown, einst das geschäftige Zentrum der
Perlenindustrie mit Billard-Saloons, Opium-Höhlen und
Bordellen, wird heute durch Ausstellungen, Geschäfte und
hübsche Straßencafés geprägt.

Ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel ist Cable Beach, circa 4
Kilometer westlich vom Stadtzentrum gelegen. Benannt nach
der ehemaligen Telegraphenleitung zwischen Broome und der
Insel Java, ist der 20 Kilometer lange mit feinem weißen
Sand bedeckte Strand insbesondere zum Sonnenuntergang ein
absolutes Muss. Wer mag, kann den Strand auch auf dem
Rücken eines Kamels erkunden, Touren werden täglich
angeboten. Etwas weniger zahme Zeitgenossen können von
Abenteurern anschließend im Broome Crocodile Park besucht
werden.

Entlang des Great Northern Highways, zwischen Broome und
Kununurra, zweigen Schauplätze wie Wolfe Creek ab, der
zweitgrößte Meteoriten-Krater der Welt und der
Purnululu-Nationalpark, der im Jahre 2003 zum
Unesco-Weltkulturerbe erklärt wurde. Für beide Szenerien
bietet es sich besonders an, sie bei einem Rundflug aus der
Luft zu betrachten. Die beste Reisezeit für die Kimberley
und Pilbara Regionen liegt zwischen Mai und November, wenn
hier noch angenehme Temperaturen herrschen und die
Feuchtigkeit des heißen Sommers vergangen ist.

Bei der Reiseplanung zu bedenken sind auf jeden Fall die
großen Entfernungen zwischen einzelnen Orten und
Haltepunkten, die für Europäer kaum vorstellbar sind. So
verbindet beispielsweise die Gibb River Road als
Schotterstrasse auf einer Länge von etwa 700 Kilometern die
beiden Orte Derby und Kununurra miteinander. Wer also das
reine, endlose und ursprüngliche Australien kennenlernen
möchte, ist im Nordwesten goldrichtig aufgehoben. Kathrin

Alan Joyce neuer Qantas-

Ablösung von Geoff Dixon bis März 2009

Der neue Vorstandsvorsitzende von Qantas Airways Limited
heißt Alan Joyce (Foto o.). Dies gab jetzt der
Aufsichtsratsvorsitzende, Leigh Clifford, bekannt. Alan
Joyce soll nach der Pensionierung des Amtsinhabers Geoff
Dixon die Geschäftsführung der ältesten
Luftfahrtgesellschaft der englischsprachigen Welt
übernehmen.

Alan Joyce, derzeit Geschäftsführer von Qantas
Tochtergesellschaft Jetstar, sei eine hervorragende
Führungskraft mit weitreichender Erfahrung in allen
Bereichen der Luftfahrtindustrie, sagte Leigh Clifford.
"Alan wird ab jetzt die Rolle des zukünftigen
Vorstandsvorsitzenden übernehmen und auch ab sofort dem
Aufsichtsrat von Qantas angehören", sagte Clifford.

Geoff Dixon wird nach der Qantas Jahreshauptversammlung am
28. November 2008 als Vorstandsvorsitzender zurücktreten,
so Clifford weiter. "Geoff und Alan werden die nächsten
vier Monate zusammenarbeiten, um einen reibungslosen
Übergang und Kontinuität zu gewährleisten. Geoff wird
Qantas bis zum 31. März 2009 beratend erhalten bleiben".

Alan Joyce ist bereits seit 2000 bei der Qantas Gruppe
tätig und arbeitete zuvor für Ansett und Aer Lingus im
Führungsstab. "Wir sind überzeugt, dass Alan die
geeignetste Person ist, um Qantas in diesem anspruchsvollen
Umfeld voranzubringen", unterstrich Clifford. "Er wird
natürlich durch ein hervorragendes Managerteam der gesamten
Qantas Gruppe unterstützt." Clifford lobte Dixon, der seit
seiner Ernennung zum Vorstandsvorsitzenden im Jahr 2000
zusammen mit seinem Team zahlreiche Herausforderungen
gemeistert hat.

Qantas fliegt heute insgesamt 140 Ziele in 37 Ländern an.
Das Unternehmen beschäftigt über 36.000 Mitarbeiter
weltweit und befördert jährlich über 36 Millionen
Passagiere. Qantas ist nach eigenen Aussagen eine der
sichersten und zugleich modernsten Fluglinien der Welt.

Cruising the Whitsundays in style

Sunday afternoon on Whitehaven Beach - the best beach in
the world according to some - and a light breeze rippled
the water as the day-tripper boats out from Airlie Beach
and Hamilton Island swung slowly on their anchors.

Ashore, their passengers sprawled along the beach's curve,
small groups of Teletubbies bobbing in the gentle swell.

Elle Macpherson might contrive to look good in a stinger
suit. Those whose bodies assume more mortal proportions,
however, are condemned to resemble lumpy versions of the
television characters as clad head to toe, in order to swim
in the clear Whitsunday waters.

The temptation to discard the suits was strong but earlier
I'd spoken to someone who had helped treat a recent
Irukandji jellyfish victim and who described the symptoms -
400 per cent increase in heart rate, excruciating pain and
a head that felt it was going to explode - so I climbed
into my green stinger suit, sucked in my stomach and went
for a swim.

Further offshore was our ship, the MV Fantasea Ammari, a
60m twin-hulled cruiser capable of accommodating 64
passengers and a crew of 22 which now operates three- and
four-night cruises from Hamilton Island.

Conceived by Hume Campbell, CEO of Fantasea and of
Brisbane-based Riverside Marine, Fantasea Ammari is a
relative newcomer to the Whitsundays.

Campbell spotted the ship while travelling in the
Mediterranean, bought it from its Sicilian owners and it
now plies the 74 islands of the Whitsunday group.

All at sea in luxury

The convenience factor is significant. We boarded Virgin
Blue flight DJ583 in Brisbane and departed slightly behind
schedule at 10.10am, arriving on time on Hamilton Island at
11.45am.

We were met at the airport, our bags transferred and by
12.30pm we were sitting on the Ammari's upper sun deck
moored off Hamilton Island.

The ship weighed anchor at 2pm and steamed slowly towards
Airlie Beach, our stately pace placing us off the beach
shortly before sunset, the lights of the bars and
restaurants bright along the distant foreshore.

The backpackers may have been thronging the bars and
restaurants that now line the main strip of Airlie Beach
but on board the Ammari, it was cocktails and a seafood
barbecue followed by drinks on deck to admire the night
sky.

Limited by its size, the Ammari may lack the casinos and
bars synonymous with large-ship cruising but it offers a
reasonable degree of comfort.

The cabins are large by any cruise ship standards but due
to the promenades which encircle the ship, lack private
balconies. It does, however, have a queen bed, flat-screen
TV, air-conditioning, fridge, ensuite bathroom, Italian
toiletries, carpets and wardrobe.

Ammari has three cabin decks, the uppermost the Lighthouse
Deck which gives the most privacy, below which is the Coral
Sea Deck accessing the lounge bar area, and then the James
Cook Deck with its boutique restaurant and pool.

Meals are served in one sitting in the dining room, which
has some outside tables that look out over the stern of the
ship and its compact but adequate swimming pool.

Breakfast was a sun-drenched affair on the open rear deck,
after which we choose the stinger suits we are to keep for
the next few days. In the distance the five-star retreat of
Hayman Island was all but hidden among the island's foliage
as we steamed around a headland from the resort to Blue
Pearl Bay.

After we were ferried ashore the adventurous paddled off to
snorkel around distant rocks while others floated offshore
and still others like myself stretched out on the sand with
a book after a perfunctory snorkel. Staring at fish does it
for some people. I find beach-lounging a more rewarding
pastime.

Sand between your toes

The next day there was an option to transfer from the
Ammari for a day trip to the outer reef. The ship can make
the voyage itself but its slower speed compared with the
fast, purpose-built reef day cruisers makes it impractical.

Other guests headed off on the tender to a nearby sandy
island cove. We declined both offers, opting for the
tranquillity of the ship while our fellow passengers were
ashore staring at fish and exploring the beach.

Whitehaven never fails to impress with the talcum-like
caress of its sand between your toes, its broad sweep
guaranteeing that you will be able to find some privacy on
the busiest of weekends. The crew set up windbreaks and
sunshades and we lingered until late, enjoying the warmth.

The ship returned to Hamilton Island on Monday morning
where we extended a three-night cruise to a five-night
break, spending two nights at The Beach Club.

Two of the best accommodation choices on Hamilton Island
are either the high-rise Reef Hotel with its sweeping views
east across the water or the low-rise Beach Club with its
private horizon swimming pool, guest-only lounge and
restaurant and direct beach access.

We walked over to the marina for drinks, had an excellent
meal in the restaurant one night and a room-service steak
sandwich and in-room movie the next and dozed by the pool.

It was a five-day getaway which took in the beauty of the
Whitsundays and laid-back cruising and Hamilton island -
the perfect winter holiday blend.

Emirates erhält den ersten A380

In Hamburg wurde letzte Woche der erste A380 an Emirates
ausgeliefert. Emirates-Chef Scheich Ahmed bin Saeed
Al-Maktoum lüftete dabei auch die Geheimnisse um die
Konfiguration des neuen Riesenjets.

Das Flugzeug wird mit drei Klassen ausgestattet. Die First
Class verfügt über 14 Suiten, in der Business Class stehen
76 Sitze zur Verfügung und in der Economy 399. In der First
Class ist der A380 im Oberdeck mit einem Dusch Spa
ausgestattet, das aus zwei Bädern mit Duschkabinen besteht.

Ebenfalls im Oberdeck befindet sich die neue Business Class
Lounge für Passagiere aus First und Business Class.

In der Economy Class sind die Wände gerade gestaltet, ein
neues Beleuchtungssystem soll für mehr komfort sorgen. Die
neue Maschine wird auf der Strecke Dubai - New York
eingesetzt, der Jungfernflug ist am 1. August geplant.

Gorge yourself in Carnarvon

We're sitting on the deck of our cabin, No. 7, at the
Carnarvon Gorge Wilderness Lodge, with aching calves
resting on the extended beams of a squatter chair.

In front of me, I gaze past the fronds of tall macrozamia
cycad and watch a pretty-faced wallaby feed a few metres
away.

Counting the distinctive rings up the cycad's trunk, I
figure the plant in front of me had been sitting there
waiting for me to join it for 600 years. If I had known how
special this place was, I wouldn't have let it wait so
long.

We've come to Carnarvon Gorge as we're making our trip
along the Great Inland Way, a highway that runs the 2691km
from Sydney to Cairns.

Talk to people you know about Carnarvon Gorge, and you're
more than likely to get one of two reactions. First can be
confusion with the Carnarvon in Western Australia, or in
the case of my English mate, confusion with the Caernarfon
Ranges in Wales, which Major Thomas Mitchell named them
after in 1846.

The other reaction is one of regret. Those who love the
rainforests of the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast hinterland
often list Carnarvon Gorge on their wish lists of a place
to visit. The reason they haven't ticked it off is the
distance. It's about a nine-hour drive from Brisbane, which
puts this off the list of things to do on a long weekend
for most.

But it is worth making the time. When you get here, you've
got a few options of where to stay. First of all, you can
pick to stay at the nearest town, which is Injune, although
you would have a drive of 160km to get to the gorge.

Gorge-ous comforts

Closer to the action, there are several options, depending
on when you come.

There is the Takarakka Bush Resort, which is a campground
with a store that has simple canvas cabins if camping isn't
your cup of tea. The closest option is to camp at the
Carnarvon Gorge Visitor Area, where the walking tracks
begin, but this is a National Park area which is open for
campers only at certain peak times such as school holidays.

If you like your comforts, the best option is the Carnarvon
Gorge Wilderness Lodge. It has a restaurant and bar, a
swimming pool, and a general room where you can read a
book, play a board game or kick off your evening by
watching a video about the gorge.

You stay in individual huts which are pretty much all the
same, with slight variations in the number of beds in a
room. They're designed to give you a camping feel, so the
top half of the wall and the roof is canvas.

But don't think you're roughing it because, canvas aside,
you would think you're staying in a traditional hotel room
with a comfortable queen-sized bed. There's an ensuite
bathroom and a mini-bar, heater and air-conditioned.

The lodge's bar opens at 5pm, and the mini-bar fridge
doesn't have alcohol so you'll have to be patient if you
have a thirst for a refreshing ale after a long day.

Rocking rock art

If you split the drive from Brisbane and arrive in the
afternoon (people typically stop at Roma), you might want
to get a taste for the gorge with the Baloon Cave
Aboriginal cultural trail, which is only about a 15-minute
walk from the lodge and will give you your first taste of
stencilled Aboriginal rock art.

But the real hiking starts as you head up the gorge.
Basically, the walk is a one-way track with side routes.
The recommendation on the map we picked up at the rangers'
hut is to walk to the furthest point you want to achieve
(Big Bend is the end of the track, 9.7km one-way from the
start although most people will turn around at the Art
Gallery, 5.4km in), then stop off on the side routes on
your way back.

That might suit some, but I reckon you're better off
stopping as you go along, choosing your side routes to time
in with meal and snack breaks. You can get a map from the
rangers' office, and head off on the gorge walk by
yourself. That's what most experienced hikers will choose
to do.

We decided to go for another option, hiking along in the
company of Damian Caling, the guide based at the wilderness
lodge who has worked at both O'Reilly's and Binna Burra. It
cost us $100 for the day ($50 per person), but it gave us a
deeper insight into what we saw.

On the way out, Damian stopped along the way and gave us
examples of bush tucker to taste and he provided a
commentary of the indigenous art we saw that was far more
detailed (and more accurate) than the interpretative panels
that are due to be updated and corrected.

And, best of all, Caling got us an introduction with his
mates. The floods that hit Emerald earlier in the year
caused a lot of damage along the gorge, particularly to the
steep staircase leading into the Amphitheatre, a 60m
roughly circular chamber that is jaw-dropping when you
stand at the base and look up.

The National Park rangers have been working for months to
fix the damage, and were due to open the Amphitheatre to
the public the next day after we visited. Because we were
with Damian, who had worked alongside the rangers in his
free time, we were allowed in as the first walkers to step
inside since the flood.

Get off the main track

To come to Carnarvon Gorge is unforgettable. To come to the
gorge and not get to see the Amphitheatre would be like
turning up to the Vatican and finding the Sistine Chapel is
closed for the day.

Generally, I'm an A-to-B type of hiker, working on the
philosophy that if things were worth seeing, they would be
on the main track.

But you would be mad to hike the return trip to the Art
Gallery without forking off for three side trips: the Moss
Garden (650m one-way from the main track); the Amphitheatre
(630m); and Ward's Canyon (270m). The Moss Garden is a calm
haven where moss grows off the wall thanks to the constant
seeping of water through the sandstone, and was used by
indigenous women as a birthing centre.

Ward's Canyon, a pocket of rainforest that includes rare
king ferns, is always one of the coolest parts of the
gorge.

We set out on our hike a little apprehensive. With a
five-year-old in tow, we weren't sure we would make the
14km trip that goes up to the Art Gallery and takes in the
three major side trips.

But the hiking is surprisingly child-friendly. On your way
to the Art Gallery, you'll cross the creek 10 times, and
each one is a fun chance to leap from one stepping stone to
the next. Our other secret weapon on the day was a supply
of small chocolate Easter eggs that were handed out for
each kilometre hiked.

It's a technique that I will base a whole chapter on when I
get around to writing my book, 101 Tips For Lousy
Parenting.

And the highlight of the walk, if you're with children, is
the Art Gallery which has paintings and carvings along a
62m long strip of sandstone. Young children might not know
their king ferns from their Kingswoods, but indigenous art
is something they instinctively understand.

And, at the end of it all, you can head back to the lodge,
and the squatter chairs on your private deck.

It's the ideal place to sit back with a book at the end of
the day, or do nothing more vigorous than count the age
rings on the nearby cycads.

Just relax. You've come a long way and you've earned it. If
you're lucky, there might be an Easter egg left, too.

To slur is human, imbibe divine

Leave the beaten track to find Australia's up-and-coming
wine destinations.

Everyone knows about the Hunter Valley, the Barossa Valley
and the Yarra Valley but there are also dozens of small
regions dotted around the country that produce fine wines
and attract far fewer visitors, making for a more relaxed
holiday.

Given there are 17 recognised wine regions in NSW alone and
dozens in other states, several districts are flying under
the radar.

Because places such as Canberra, Heathcote, the Southern
Highlands and the South Burnett remain largely
undiscovered, you are much more likely to get a personal
tasting experience with the winemaker or owner, and
discover a wine none of your friends has yet tasted.

Canberra

The national capital may not be the first place you
consider when talking about gourmet destinations but the
Canberra region is dotted with about 40 fine wineries (many
of which are actually in NSW), including two that rank
among the best in the country; Clonakilla and Helm.

A tiny Canberra region winery, Collector, had its 2005
Marked Tree Red Shiraz named as the best overall wine at
the 2007 NSW Top 40 Wine Awards.

Clonakilla, where Tim Kirk is the winemaker, helped
spearhead the popularity of the shiraz-viognier blend and
has a lovely cellar door overlooking the vines at
Murrumbateman, while regional pioneer Ken Helm is regarded
as one of the best riesling makers in the country; his
rustic cellar door is a former school hall once used for
Temperance Union meetings.

Yarrh, a rising star, has a rammed-earth and
corrugated-iron cellar door and winery where visitors can
look in on the winemaking process - and offers a food and
wine matching lunch on the first Sunday of each month. Shaw
Vineyard Estate is home to Witchery Kitchen@Shaw, which
produces some fine food to accompany the house wines.

If you time your visit to coincide with the October long
weekend, you can enjoy all the colour and diversion of the
Murrumbateman Moving Feast, a low-key but very enjoyable
food and wine festival, and sample all the wines from the
Murrumbateman Cool Climate Wine Show.

On the Lake George side of town, Lerida Estate's Cafe
Lerida is a popular lunchtime spot and the winery makes
excellent pinot noir and pinot gris.

Where to eat and drink: Cafe Lerida, Witchery Kitchen and
the Poachers Pantry (which is also the Wily Trout cellar
door) all do good cellar door lunches. For dinner, Ottoman
Cuisine is probably the best Turkish restaurant in the
country, while Aubergine, Courgette and Sabayon all serve
modern, inventive cuisine in stylish surrounds. Afternoon
high tea in the lounge of the Hyatt Hotel is a must.

Where to stay: The Hyatt Hotel is by far the most chic
address, while Hotel Realm is a brand new five-star hotel.
If you want to sleep among the vines Country Guesthouse
Schonegg is a cross between a European-style guest house
and a motel in rural Murrumbateman that offers a warm
welcome and excellent weekend dinners.

Heathcote

Despite its reputation for being one of Australia's best
regions for producing high-quality shiraz, and its location
just over an hour from Melbourne, Heathcote remains in the
shadow of the Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula. It is
110 kilometres north of Melbourne and 40 kilometres from
Bendigo, a mere speck on the map in reality, but the rural
ambience is hugely appealing.

Weekends, when more cellar doors are open and winery
restaurants such as Flynn's Wines' Heathcotean Bistro throw
open their doors, are the best time to visit.

Major wineries including Tyrrell's, Seppelt, Shadowfax,
Green Point, Hardys and Brown Brothers are all using
Heathcote fruit but most of the local wineries remain small
operations.

Shelmerdine and Carlei, both of which also have extensive
interests in the Yarra, are outstanding local producers
alongside wineries such as Wild Duck Creek, Jasper Hill,
Redesdale Estate, Sanguine Estate, Galli Estate, Flynn's
and McIvor Estate.

Where to eat and drink: Shelmerdine's Whistler Cafe and
Gardens, overlooking the vines and some dramatic granite
rocks, is a superb venue for a long lunch and has a lovely
relaxed atmosphere, while the weekends-only Heathcotean
Bistro is very popular. Cellar & Store is a great place for
lunch or to pick up picnic provisions.

Where to stay: Auberge de la Rose is a charming
self-catering cottage, set among the Redesdale Estate
vines, while the Emeu Inn is an atmospheric 150-year-old
gourmet getaway with six luxury suites.

South Burnett

Queensland is not a state that is automatically associated
with wine production, even though the Granite Belt region
around Stanthorpe, just north of the NSW border, has been
producing good wines for two or three decades.

An exciting, newer and largely undiscovered wine-producing
region is the South Burnett, which is home to more than 20
wineries and cellar doors. The countryside is spectacularly
beautiful but there are no big-city facilities.

The South Burnett is located on top of the Great Dividing
Range and is 2 1/2 hours' drive north-west of Brisbane,
inland from the Sunshine Coast. Major towns include
Kingaroy, also known for its peanuts, Nanango and Goomeri.

Clovely Estate is the biggest regional producer but you'll
also find a warm welcome at small producers such as
Captain's Paddock, Ziebarth, Moffatdale Ridge and Crane
Wines, all of which have good ranges.

Barambah makes outstanding chardonnays, cabernets and
shirazes and its cellar door is shared with the Kingaroy
Cheese Company, making it a great place to stop for a
gourmet tasting.

Where to eat and drink: Captain's Paddock bistro is the
perfect spot for a winery lunch (try the spicy peanut
soup), Ziebarth's do great homemade pies, Moffatdale Ridge
offers good food and great views, while the Bell Tower
Restaurant outside Kingaroy does gourmet dinners. Cheese
World at Goomeri is an excellent deli if you feel like a
picnic.

Where to stay: Deshons Retreat is a very classy country
getaway outside Kingaroy with two well-equipped cottages
and welcoming owners. The Left Bank at the former mining
town of Kilkivan is a quirky but friendly and comfortable
bed and breakfast.

Southern Highlands

The Highlands, cool in autumn and spring, decidedly crisp
in winter, has long been a bolt-hole for Sydney's elite -
but it is only in the past decade or so that the region has
stamped itself as a serious producer of wine.

The cool climatic conditions make the Highlands something
of a food bowl, and the area is dotted with orchards,
grazing land and, more recent additions, vineyards, the
first of which were planted more than 20 years ago.

The Highlands are now home to close to 50 vineyards and 15
cellar doors - not surprising given the vineyards sit
between 500 and 900metres above sea level and offer one of
the longest growing seasons in the country.

The soils are rich, the days warm, the nights cool and the
climate near-perfect for growing grapes. Pinot noir,
riesling and pinot gris are considered key grape varieties,
but Italian varieties show immense promise.

Centennial Vineyards is home to the biggest cellar door and
restaurant complex, but several of the other wineries,
including Southern Highland Wines, Sutton Forest Estate and
Eling Forest, have on-site dining. Also pop into
Mundrakoona, which produces Fish Rock beers.

Other star wineries include Mount Ashby, Blue Metal,
Bou-saada and Joadja.

Where to eat and drink: Eschalot and The Journeyman, both
in Berrima, serve high-quality food and have excellent wine
lists, while the lunches at the Centennial Vineyards
Restaurant are legendary, as are the a la carte dinners at
Hordern's at Milton Park.

Where to stay: Milton Park Country House Hotel, set in
beautiful gardens, and Peppers Manor House are luxurious
getaways where food and wine are treated with respect.

Tiger Airways Australia will axe its Darwin services from
October 26, blaming high airport costs. Have your say!

The airline had already reduced its flights to Darwin and
recently cut flights to Newcastle in what appears to be a
contraction of its network, reports The Australian.

Tiger Aviation chief operating officer Steve Burns said the
cost of operating to Darwin was the highest of any airport
on the airline's network.

"This is an important point to stress: combined airport and
fuel costs in Darwin cost more than any of the 27 airports
the airline serves across Australia and Asia. It is just
incompatible for a true low-fare airline to operate to such
a high-cost destination," he said.

The airline will continue to assess the situation at Darwin
Airport with the intention of re-establishing services "if
costs become more reasonable".

But Tiger's erratic behaviour is unlikely to give support
to its quest to change federal government rules to allow it
to operate its Australian planes overseas.

Tiger argues that changing federal government rules to
allow it to fly international services will mean more
aircraft and jobs in Australia.

The airline is lobbying the Government to axe requirements
that international airlines operating from this country
must be 51 per cent Australian-owned.

It says it should be allowed to fly from Australia as long
as this country remains its principal place of business.

Tiger also says announcements about its second base and the
deployment of three aircraft arriving later this year are
"imminent", but refuses to elaborate.

Tiger chief executive Tony Davis says opening up the
international routes would allow Tiger to bring in more
planes and provide more jobs, and it would pay tax on its
operations.

He says the airline wants to fly from Australia to
destinations such as Kuala Lumpur, recently vacated by
rival Jetstar.

Jetstar to open international
base in Darwin

Jetstar will establish an international hub in Darwin, says
Northern Territory Chief Minister Paul Henderson.

It follows news last night that Tiger Airways will axe its
services to Darwin from Melbourne and Singapore, with the
budget airline blaming high fuel and operating costs.

Mr Henderson today sought to soften the blow to
Territorians, announcing the government and Jetstar had
entered into a five year agreement.

Under this the airline will base seven planes in Darwin.

"The Territory government will provide $5 million to
support the establishment of the hub and $3 million to
support marketing of routes and destinations," Mr Henderson
told reporters.

Jetstar is the first national airline to set up an
international base in Darwin and Mr Henderson welcomed the
move as "great news for Territory travellers and for our
economy".

The new deal is expected to inject $160 million into the
territory economy, create more than 570 jobs and open the
door to an additional 250,000 tourists.

Jetstar flights to Ho Chi Minh City start on September 1
and, under the agreement, Jetstar will operate new routes
to South-East Asia using three aircraft by the end of June
2009.

Four other aircraft will come on line by the end of June
2012.

"The aim of the agreement is to grow the international
market and the Darwin hub," Mr Henderson said.

Meanwhile, Tiger announced last night that its services to
Darwin will be suspended from October 26.

Tiger chief operating officer Steve Burns said the costs of
flying to Darwin were the highest of all the airports the
airline served.

"This is an important point to stress: combined airport and
fuel costs in Darwin cost more than any of the 27 airports
that the airline serves across Australia and Asia. It is
just incompatible for a true low-fare airline to operate to
such a high cost destination," he said.

Rob Bredl macht, gemeinsam mit der Naturfotografin Lin
Sutherland, eine Reise in den nördlichsten Teil
Australiens, um sich dort einen Eindruck von der
"Waffenkammer" der Tierwelt zu verschaffen. Bei seiner
Suche nach den tödlichsten Schlangen führt uns Rob anhand
der lebensgefährlichen Braunschlangen und Taipane die
schnelle und vernichtende Wirkungsweise ihrer Giftzähne
vor. Auch die großen Falltür- und Vogelspinnen sind
imstande, mit ihren Giftklauen sogar Vögel zu töten, um sie
dann zu fressen. Aber die Frage ist hier doch, warum und
wie vor allem die Schlangen im Laufe der Evolution ihre
Giftzähne als tödliche Waffe entwickelt haben, und wieso
bestimmte Schlangenarten bis heute darauf verzichten
konnten. Lernen wir die Beiß- und Loslassmethode der
Taipane kennen, und erleben wir, wie auch Rob und Lin bei
ihren Untersuchungen nicht davor bewahrt bleiben, von
Schlangen, Ratten und anderen Tieren gebissen zu werden.

Felix landet in Australien - ausgerechnet auf dem

Geheimnisse heiliger Stätten, urzeitlicher Felszeichnungen
und besonderer Musikinstrumente einweiht. Er lehrt Felix
einige Mythen der Ureinwohner und das Bumerangwerfen.
Schliesslich führt er ihn durch einen geheimen Gang in die
Freiheit.

Kakerlaken und Libellen
Ruud Kleinpaste, der begeisterte Insektenforscher, ist
Niederländer und lebt seit 1978 auf Neuseeland. Die
sympathische Mischung aus Indiana Jones und durchgedrehtem
Professor begibt sich auf die Suche nach den größten
Krabblern der Erde. Dabei durchstreift er die Dschungel und
Wüsten unseres Planeten. Beim Frühstück pult er
unerschrocken wuselnde Kakerlaken aus seinen Cornflakes,
und weil die ihm viel zu winzig sind, geht's ab ins
australische Outback, zu den Riesenkakerlaken. Ekel?, Keine
Spur! Liebevoll buddelt Ruud die gigantischen Krabbler aus
ihren Höhlen unter der Erde. Erst wenn es regnet, kommen
die gepanzerten Buddelweltmeister freiwillig an die
Oberfläche, bei Feuchtigkeit fühlen sich die australischen
Großschaben, die bis zu 10 Jahre alt werden, am wohlsten.
Im tropischen Regenwald Südamerikas spürt Ruud die größte
Libelle der Welt auf: Die gab es schon vor mehr als 300
Millionen Jahren auf unserem Planeten. In Urzeiten war sie
sogar doppelt so groß wie heute, fast einen halben Meter
Durchmesser hatten die Flügel der Urlibellen, und das nur
dank höherer Sauerstoffkonzentration in der Luft. Kann man
bei weniger Sauerstoff schrumpfen?, fragt Ruud und schnappt
sogleich im Selbstversuch in einer Unterdruckkammer nach
äußerst dünner Luft mit geringem Sauerstoffgehalt... Der
Abenteuer-Trip mit Ruud Kleinpaste birgt jede Menge
Überraschungen und lehrt Respekt und Begeisterung für die
Krabbler, die unseren Planeten bevölkern. Trotzdem ist es
doch irgendwie beruhigend, dass die größten und
gefährlichsten Krabbler nicht auf unserem Kontinent,
sondern vorwiegend in Australien, Neuseeland oder Nord- und
Südamerika zuhause sind.

Notlandung in der Krokodilbucht
Es ist die Zeit der Pioniere, als Piloten zum ersten Mal
Weltmeere überfliegen, Nord- und Südpol, große Wüsten und
hohe Gebirge. 1932 geraten zwei deutsche Piloten auf dem
Nachtflug von Indonesien über die Timor-See in einem Orkan
vom Kurs ab und müssen buchstäblich mit dem letzten Tropfen
Benzin an einem unbekannten Küstenstreifen Australiens
notwassern. Es ist der Beginn einer wochenlangen
Höllenfahrt, "bis man uns fand und das fast verlorene Leben
wiederschenkte". Die einzige Verpflegung der völlig
überforderten Piloten besteht aus einer Banane, und trinken
müssen sie das ekelige Kühlwasser im Motor des
Wasserflugzeuges. Die qualvolle Odyssee der Piloten und die
Verquickung unglaublicher Zufälle, die im allerletzten
Augenblick zur Erlösung führen, werden in einer Mischung
aus Spielszenen und Dokumentaraufnahmen, Fotos und
historischem Filmmaterial nachgestellt. Ein aufregender
Film, in dem zwei Gestrandete und ihr uriges Flugboot, die
Ureinwohner Australiens und eine surrealistische Landschaft
die Hauptrolle spielen. Ein unfreiwilliges Abenteuer, bei
dem einer der "Helden" den Verstand verliert und der andere
zu Gott findet.

Sa 09.08. 18:45_19:15 DMAX: Bondi Beach
Die Rettungsschwimmer von Sydney
Weihnachten am Bondi Beach - der Mix aus starker Strömung,
alkoholisierten Touristenmassen und Feiertags-Surfern
erfordert die ganze Aufmerksamkeit der Rettungsschwimmer an
Australiens bekanntestem Strand. Mindestens 10.000
Touristen werden heute erwartet, und die Lifeguards
befürchten ein Gelage an Feiernden, die betrunken in die
Fluten springen. Da sind Rettungen wie am Fließband
vorprogrammiert. Die irische Touristin Michelle ist nicht
begeistert, als Chef-Retter Hoppo sie aus dem Wasser zieht.
Und ein übermütiger Teenager hat sich nebenan im Skatepark
den Arm gebrochen - seine Bergung erweist sich als
kompliziert.

seit 28.03. Hamburg: Bilder & Wein
Seit 28. März 2008 gibt es jeden Monat im Fotostudio in
Hamburg-Groß Borstel einen australischen Abend. Vorgestellt
werden bebilderte Reiseberichte. Frank Erpinar ist Fotograf
und reiste in den letzten 14 Jahren 14 mal nach Down Under.
Nun möchten er und seine Frau ihre Begeisterung für Land
und Leute gern an andere weitergeben. Neben Bilder werden
auch australisches Weinwissen samt Weinprobe angeboten –
für jeweils 29,50 Euro.

Sa/So 22./23.08. Bruck a.d. Mur (Ö): Didgeridoo-Festival
Nach Angaben der Veranstalter findet im Naturschutzzentrum
Bruck Weitental wieder ein in Europa einzigartiges Festival
statt. Angeboten werden neben Didgeridoo-Klängen auch
Seminare zu Gesundheit, Musik und Kunst. Es soll
Gelegenheit zur Meditation geboten werden und es werden
Workshops zur Körperbemalung (Akt- und Bodypainting) und
der Fotografie angeboten. Weitere Wellnessbausteine sind
